Family Fun Day at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex

familyday

I would like to take a moment to invite all residents to the official Family Fun Day at the Goulbourn Rec Complex (1500 Shea Rd). The event will take place on Family Day, Monday, February 20th from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

There will be a large range of activities including public skating, public swimming, magic shows, carnival games and even some special visits from some special princesses.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the front desk and residents are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable donation for the Stittsville Food Bank.

As with last year’s event, this is certain to be a great time for the whole family. I hope everyone is able to join and I look forward to seeing you there!

Open House Meet and Greet at the GRC

I, along with staff from the Goulbourn Recreational Complex, would like to invite all residents to an Open House and Meet and Greet this January 21st. The event will be held at the GRC (1500 Shea Road) from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM.

This is an excellent opportunity to introduce community members to the new Portfolio Manager of the complex, Kevin Shantz, and ask any questions they may have regarding upcoming programming for the 2017 season.

I would also like to invite residents to discuss with myself any issues and concerns they may have on ward-related items. I am looking forward to meeting any new residents I may not yet have had the pleasure of meeting and hope to see many familiar faces as well.

Councillor’s Annual Cookie Decorating and Visit with Santa!

I am happy to invite all residents to my office’s annual Cookie Decorating and Santa Visit at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex (GRC) on Saturday, December 3rd between 9:00 and 11:00 AM.

Word on the street is that Santa will be making a special appearance around 10:10 AM so make sure to arrive early.

As is customary each year, Gingerbread cookies will be decorated and photographs will be taken with Santa Claus. This is one of my favourite events of the year as it celebrates the family togetherness which the holiday season always tends to bring out.

The Gingerbread Cookie Decorating and Photo with Santa is an event my office and I host every year in December, giving residents and their families the opportunity to gather together and get into the Holiday spirit.

The GRC will have a booth set up to provide free face painting and crafts during this morning event. My apologies for any confusion.

I hope many residents get a chance to visit with their children and enjoy this once a year event!

Erica Wiebe Gymnasium Commemoration Ceremony

As announced at her homecoming party on August 25th, the Goulbourn Recreation Complex (GRC) Gymnasium will be undergoing a commemorative naming for Olympic gold-medalist and Stittsville-born Erica Wiebe.

Erica came out on top in the Women’s Freestyle 75-kilogram wrestling category, earning Canada’s fourth, and final gold medal in the Rio Summer Olympics this year.

As the City Councillor of Stittsville, I am thrilled to bestow this honour onto Erica and her family on behalf of the community and would like to invite all residents to share this moment on November 1st from 7:00-8:00 PM. The event will be held at the GRC, 1500 Shea Rd, right beside Sacred Heart High School where Erica spent the formative years of her life developing her love of wrestling. The gym is a second home to many impressionable future Olympians.

Three focal workshops include “Fight Back Osteoporosis” October 21st, “Prevent Falls/Healthy Bones” January 13th, and “The Healthy Heart” February 24th.

I encourage any residents either diagnosed or interested in taking preventative measures to look into these great workshops by visiting Ottawa.ca or emailing grc@ottawa.ca.

Councillor’s View – Erica Wiebe Gymnasium and her Week in Stittsville

20160825_193421

This week, Stittsville was buzzing with the news that “fresh-off-the-podium” Olympic gold-medalist and athlete, Erica Wiebe was in town!

Erica arrived Tuesday morning at the Ottawa International Airport to a crowd of eager supporters. I was pleased to be among them to greet her along with Mayor Jim Watson and Councillor Marianne Wilkinson.

From there, my team jumped immediately into planning for Thursday’s Homecoming Reception at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex (GRC), where a crowed of over 400 came out to congratulate and meet their Olympic Champion. We were joined by Mayor JWatson and Councillor Wilkinson. With the support of Mayor Watson I had the distinct privilege to announce that the gym in the GRC will be named the Erica Wiebe Gym in recognition of her accomplishment at the 2016 Olympic Games.

This is an ideal honour fitting for an incredibly-talented athlete such as Erica.

The Goulbourn Recreation Complex is just beside Sacred Heart High School where Erica spent the formative years of her life developing her love of wrestling. The gym is a second home to many impressionable future-Olympians involved in the broad range of summer camps between school years.

It is my hope that the Erica Wiebe Gym will inspire many more young athletes in their pursuits to shoot for gold as Erica has – that they will work hard, play harder, and always remember to keep a shining and optimistic attitude throughout whatever challenges lie ahead. To coin a phrase by Erica herself, “We are defined by the accumulation of each day we spend in pursuit of our goals, rather than the day we achieve them.”

I would like to thank all residents who were able to join us in making Erica feel the pride we shared when she represented Canada at the Olympic Games. She was deeply touched – as was I – in bearing witness to what a supportive community we have.

Pool Closures at GRC

The Goulbourn Recreation Complex and Richcraft Recreation Complex will be closed from August 29th-September 19th/18th due to annual maintenance.

The complexes have requirements to remain open from mid September until the end of June due to demand and the City tries to avoid closures for aquatic operations during the summer period as much as possible. Facility closure decisions are not arbitrary, but a result of analysis of program registration statistics and other user requirements.

I encourage interested residents to review the city’s public swimming schedules web page which identifies the current pool closures and provides a search option for pool schedules here.

For an alternative option, the Kanata Leisure Centre had its annual maintenance closure for 2016 in March/April and is currently open for all programs and services. Please note that fall schedules will be changing in September; updated schedules will also be available at the link above.
