They can also visit any Client Service Centre or locations with service staff that can help with registration. Some community centres may provide printed brochures for their local activities.

Flu Shots at the GRC… and a new Recycling Program!

Ottawa Paramedics will be stopping by the Goulbourn Rec Complex (1500 Shea Rd) to administer the flu shot on December 11, 13, 14, and 15 from 9:30-1:00 and December 16 from 9:00-3:00.

Plan ahead to coincide your next rec visit with protecting yourself and others from sickness this flu season!

I would like to thank Robert Wilson with Paramedic Services for bringing this event to our attention and doing this for our community as it is a great benefit bringing this service right to the GRC.

And while you’re there, check out the new recycling program now available!

Trick or Swim or Skate!

This Halloween, consider giving a healthier alternative to the standard Halloween treat.

Once again this year, the perfect candy-free alternative for a Halloween treat is Trick or Swim or Skate tickets.

Each ticket is good for admission to a public swim or skate at a City recreation facility. You can hand them out at the door on Halloween night or give them directly to the little trick-or-treater in your life.

Tickets are available now, while supplies last, at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex (1500 Shea Road) or other participating City recreation facilities near you.

Trick or Swim or Skate tickets are:

  • fun;
  • affordable ($10 for 10 tickets);
  • allergy free;
  • have zero calories;
  • gluten free;
  • They promote an active lifestyle; AND
  • They do not cause cavities!

Plus, a public swimming or public skating session is bound to last way longer than any mini chocolate bar, even for the slowest of eaters.

Kids ages 3- 15 can redeem their tickets from November 1, 2017 to January 31, 2018 during regularly scheduled public or family swims and skates at City pools and select arenas (unfortunately, tickets are not valid for wave swims).

I highly encourage residents to consider giving the gift of physical activity to all the little ghosts and ghouls this Halloween!

The Complex is Haunted!

Stop by the Goulbourn Rec Complex on October 27th for an array of spoOoOoOoky fun!

Show off your costume as you partake in cookie decorating, a haunted house, a spooky family portrait and more!

Admission is free and donations will be accepted toward the Stittsville Food Bank. The event runs from 5:00-7:00 PM with Haunted Swim continuing until 8:30.

I hope that all residents join this great opportunity for a wicked good time!

Two-for-one deals available at City recreation centres

The City of Ottawa is launching Ottawa Fit 150 with a special two-for-one offer available to anyone who visits select recreation facilities including Stittsville’s Goulbourn Recreational Complex on National Fitness Day, Saturday, June 3.

Twenty-three facilities will host open houses on June 3 during their regular hours of operation where visitors can receive:

  • 2-for-1 passes for fitness classes, weight rooms or pool access
  • A tour of the facility, a chance to meet the staff
  • Giveaways and swag
  • Information about membership features and opportunities

Throughout the remainder of 2017, select recreation facilities will host special events – 150 in total – to encourage physical activity among Ottawa residents and celebrate Canada’s milestone birthday at the same time. Visit to learn more about events and recreation facilities near you.

On National Health and Fitness Day, everyone is encouraged to be active for at least one hour. Getting active can be fun and simple with activities like walking, gardening or riding a bicycle.

I highly encourage all residents to take this great opportunity to bring a friend and stop by the GRC for a swim!

Come Visit Me for a City Chat at the GRC

At the Stittsville Planning Primer, a large amount of information was presented showing the complexity of the planning process.

For a complete picture of the active and pending development applications in Stittsville I encourage you to review the Ward 6 Development Applications Map. You can search the development name or file number on my website or on the City’s Development Application site

I would like to invite residents to join me on Saturday, April 22 from 10am-Noon in the Lobby of the Goulbourn Recreation Complex at 1500 Shea Road for a City Chat on Planning and Development.

My City Chat sessions offer an informal setting where I can speak to residents one-on-one on topics of interest.

I would also like to get a better understanding of what topics are most of interest to Stittsville residents in regards to development. I would like to request that you take 10 seconds out of your day and give your feedback on our Planning and Development Poll available here.

Thank you for keeping involved and I look forward to chatting with residents on April 22.

GRC + Commemorative Namings at Council

At this week’s City Council meeting, Council approved both commemorative naming proposals for future parks in Stittsville’s Abbottsville Development to be named in honour of Susanna Kemp and Lee Boltwood. The concept plan for the first of these park developments was also released this week. You can read more about that in the next article.

Additionally, I am happy to report that another commemorative naming for the Grace Thompson Meeting Room at the Stittsville Library was passed at this week’s Library Board Meeting.

Honouring outstanding residents in our community is something I feel quite passionately about. I would like to thank the families of these individuals for their role in this process and I look forward to when each named facility is open to our community.

Council also approved the sponsorship naming rights proposal for the Goulbourn Recreational Complex to be renamed Cardel Rec – Goulbourn.

This is similar to what has happened at other City recreation facilities such as the Minto Recreation Complex in Barrhaven or the Richcraft Recreation Complex in Kanata. In order to ensure that our area’s rich historical background remain intact, I did negotiate with City Staff and Cardel Homes to ensure that the name Goulbourn remain a part of the facility’s name.

Cardel Homes will pay the City $600,000 (plus HST) over 15 years to acquire the naming rights. The offer will provide the City with $40,000 (plus HST) annually which will be applied against the Council approved target for sponsorship revenues. The arena, pool, meeting rooms, outdoor fields and other components of the complex will not be affected.

Changes will occur as soon as Cardel is prepared to initiate the launch. I will supply more information on this in my weekly newsletter as it is received.

Stittsville Recreational Guide Spring/Summer

With Spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to sign up for Spring/Summer Recreational Courses at one of our great City facilities including the Goulbourn Rec Complex, the Fringewood Community Centre, the Johnny Leroux Arena, and more. To view the complete Guide in PDF form, please click here.

Swim registration begins March 6th at 9:00 online or March 7th in person while land/dry registration begins March 8th at 9:00 online or March 9th in person

To register online or by phone you will require a client barcode and family PIN numbers. High volumes of online registrants are expected throughout the first week of registration, particularly the first evening, which could result in a longer registration experience than usual.

I highly encourage all residents to take an opportunity to kick off their 2017 right with some healthy and fun activities where you can make friends and improve your skills.

You can also visit for more information on registration and conditions.

Family Fun Day at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex

I would like to take a moment to invite all residents to the official Family Fun Day at the Goulbourn Rec Complex (1500 Shea Rd). The event will take place on Family Day, Monday, February 20th from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

With all of the snow this year, this is a great opportunity to get out of the house and spend some time with loved ones on a day dedicated to families. And there’s something for everyone too!

As it has been in the past, this is always a very exciting event featuring a large range of activities including public skating, public swimming, magic shows, carnival games and even some special visits from some special princesses.

This is also a good chance to visit the Goulbourn Rec Complex and try out the facilities for any upcoming programming.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the front desk and residents are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable donation for the Stittsville Food Bank.

Please be aware all regular programming is cancelled on Family Day due to this special event. This includes the fitness studio, spin room, gymnasiums and regularly scheduled swims. The arena is open as usual for rental groups.

I hope that all residents take the time to visit this great event to spend some family fun time. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Open House Meet and Greet at the GRC

I, along with staff from the Goulbourn Recreational Complex, would like to invite all residents to an Open House and Meet and Greet this January 21st. The event will be held at the GRC (1500 Shea Road) from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM.

This is an excellent opportunity to introduce community members to the new Portfolio Manager of the complex, Kevin Shantz, and ask any questions they may have regarding upcoming programming for the 2017 season.

I would also like to invite residents to discuss with myself any issues and concerns they may have on ward-related items. Please stop by to share a cup of coffee as I am looking forward to meeting any new residents I may not yet have had the pleasure of meeting and hope to see many familiar faces as well.
