February is Black History Month.
This is an important time to celebrate the achievements, the legacy, and the history of Black Canadians. For 2018, the theme of the Government of Canada’s Black History Month campaign is Black Canadian Women: Stories of Strength, Courage and Vision.
Black Canadians have played a key role in developing Canada’s rich cultural diversity for hundreds of years and have helped to shape Canada into the compassionate and prosperous nation it is today. However, the acknowledgement of these accomplishments has not always been present.
In the face of racism, discrimination, and bigotry, Black Canadians continue to contribute to the prominence of our country and make Canada a better place to live for all.
I encourage all residents to take an opportunity this month to learn more about some of the important figures who have helped to shape Canadian history whose names you may not know.
