With Local Food Week in progress, I would like to take a moment to share a great initiative organized by local organization, Just Food.
With the New Roots Project, Just Food is supporting New Canadians to gain access to locally grown food and farming experience on Canadian soil by providing them with land to grow food for their family and the knowledge of how to grow on Canadian soil, tackle our local pests, and start their farming journey in their new home.
This project is tied with Just Food’s Plant-a-row, Donate-a-row City-wide campaign, which encourages every gardener to grow a little extra in their yard, farm, or community garden with the intent of donating it to your local emergency food cupboards throughout the city.
As the season continues there will be more opportunities for volunteers to participate in the Plant-a-row Donate-a-row champion site. If you’re interested in volunteering, please fill out the form here.
I highly encourage residents to share this initiative with any new Canadians living in our community with an interest in becoming involved with agriculture. For more information, or if you have any spare gardening tools that you’re looking to donate to this project, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
