I would like to let residents know about a special event being hosted by the National Capital Commission (NCC) in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary.
On the final Saturday of Winterlude, February 18th, all 7.8 km of the Rideau Canal Skateway will be closed from downtown to Hartwells Locks in order to welcome thousands of young hockey players to CIBC’s Shinny Hockey Day.

150 games of shinny hockey will take place from 7:00 – 9:15 AM. Minor teams (Novice to Peewee age categories) from Canada’s Capital Region will have the chance of a lifetime to play a game of shinny hockey in celebration of our country’s sesquicentennial anniversary.

The shinny games will last 60 minutes. Teams will play a five-on-five game with no goalies, and players substituting as needed.

As soon as the shinny hockey games are over, the Rideau Canal Skateway teams will reopen the ice rink to the public.

If you wish to make it out to watch the game or participate in any of the other fun Winterlude events, please remember that the Queen Elizabeth Driveway will be closed to motorists on Saturday, February 18, from 7 am to 8:30 pm; on Sunday, February 19, from 9:30 am to 6 pm; and on Monday, February 20, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm to accommodate Winterlude activities.

I hope that many residents are able to make it out to watch this momentous occasion as it is certain to be something you won’t want to miss!
