There was a proposal put forward this past week to make some improvements to our Stittsville library. One of the major proposed improvements includes re-carpeting the entire branch. The existing carpeting is near end of life, and when the branch was first built, City staff had agreed to funding the replacement of the carpet when the time came. In order to proceed with such a rigorous improvement to our library, it’s being proposed that the branch will temporarily close from June 17 to July 14, 2016 for a total of 23 days.
Given the length of the closure, City staff have recommended that a Library Depot be set up in the meeting room of the Stittsville branch. The Depot service will start on Saturday June 18, 2016 and will be open to the public for the same hours as the branch currently is now. The full branch will reopen to the public on Friday, July 15, 2016.
The Depot will enable customers to drop off books/videos, pick up holds, and select some books/videos from small browsing collections. A rear door will be used to access this room, with appropriate signage and notifications being put in place to make all customers aware of this service and its entry point. Stittsville Branch employees will be redeployed during the closure, with some being assigned to the Depot and others to nearby branches.
I believe that efforts to improve and maintain our library, a location that fosters community, education, and growth, should be welcomed. If you have any questions or comments regarding the proposal, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
