I would like to take a moment to address a motion I am bringing to council in the near future. Residents – current and future – living in the Fernbank Community Design Plans as well as those West of Terry Fox are in Ward 6 Stittsville; however, Canada Post identifies the area as Kanata. The same goes for businesses; for example, the Toys R Us on Hazeldean Road and the Walmart on Terry Fox Drive both have Kanata postal codes, but are in Ward 6 Stittsville.
As you can imagine, this results in mass confusion among both residents and facilitators of Canada Post.
My motion reads “BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Ottawa request Canada Post Corporation recognize the properties located within the area identified on the attached map as being part of Stittsville, and revise the mailing addresses for these properties to reflect the same, in addition to being located in Ottawa.
I have been assured by Canada Post that upon their review of this draft, there will be no costs to the City to recognize the change. Ordinarily, a list of addresses would be required but as much of the Fernbank lands are currently under construction with new addresses being added, a description of the land would suffice.
This is an important motion for me to bring to Council as it establishes Stittsville’s rich, cultural presence within the city of Ottawa. There is a sense of communal belonging within the residents of our Ward and when boundary lines are confused, this community pride takes a hit.
It is my wish that moving forward, we can welcome the new residents of the Fernbank community with open arms – creating an awareness that this is not a community made up of houses and streets but of people helping people.
As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can work together to keep an open dialogue within the community of Stittsville. Please contact our office anytime by phone at 613-580-2476 or by e-mail at Shad.Qadri@ottawa.ca
